County Office Building Santa Barbara, California. Work done while at Blackbird Architects.

This 30,000 square foot building was sited on a property owned by Santa Barbara County, and is adjacent to the US 101 freeway. The principal tenant, the Air Pollution Control District, sought to consolidate their operations in a building that reflected their mission of environmental stewardship and public accountability. The building is bermed into the hillside and angled to create a landscaped courtyard centered around outdoor work stations and a protected Live Oak. A 300 foot long wisteria trellis serves as both the public identity of the building from the freeway, and as an integral part of its shading and cooling strategy.
